Questions about the game

Block Jigsaw FAQ

Answers to common questions about puzzle generation, controls, difficulty, privacy and how the browser game behaves.

Do I need an account to play?

No. All regular puzzles and the Daily Challenge remain playable without signing in. An account is only needed if you want to register a Daily Challenge score on the public leaderboard or keep competitive achievements across devices.

How does the leaderboard score work?

For the Daily Challenge, your ranked score is your completion time plus a 15-second penalty for each hint used. Replaying the same date can improve your best ranked result.

How does the weekly leaderboard work?

Each UTC Daily Challenge has its own ranking. Your daily placement earns weekly points: first place earns 100, second earns 99, and every ranked finish earns at least one point. This avoids comparing raw solve times across daily puzzles with different difficulty modes.

What information is public on my player profile?

Your chosen display name and game-related competitive results may be public. Your sign-in email address and authentication details are not shown on the leaderboard.

Is Block Jigsaw free to play?

Yes. The browser game can be played without creating an account or paying to unlock a mode.

Are the puzzles always solvable?

Each generated puzzle starts from a complete board that is partitioned into connected regions, so the piece set begins with at least one known solution. However, the game allows any legal placement, which means your own partial arrangement can create a dead end. In that case, move one or more pieces and try a different configuration.

Why does the game accept a piece in a place that later turns out to be wrong?

Because Block Jigsaw checks whether the placement is geometrically legal, not whether it matches the generator's original solution. This preserves the planning element: a move can be legal without being strategically useful.

Can a puzzle have more than one solution?

Yes, that is possible. The original generated arrangement is a known solution, but the completion rule is simply that every board cell is filled with no overlap. Another complete arrangement is accepted if it satisfies those rules.

Can I play on a phone or tablet?

Yes. Touch devices can drag pieces directly. In modes that allow rotation, the mobile layout supports a horizontal swipe on a selected piece, and the Rotate button remains available. The page also provides a Full Screen control.

Which modes allow rotation?

Explorer, Challenge, Master and Expert allow rotation. Little Explorer and Junior keep the original piece orientation to reduce the number of decisions for newer players.

Which mode allows flipping?

Expert mode enables flipping. Flipping mirrors the selected piece and adds another type of transformation beyond 90-degree rotation.

What does the Hint button do?

A hint highlights a piece and a target region derived from the puzzle's generated starting solution. The easier modes give stronger assistance; harder modes keep the hint lighter.

What is the difference between Reset and New Puzzle?

Reset lets you restart the current generated puzzle. New Puzzle creates another puzzle using the selected mode's settings.

Why are the age labels approximate?

Puzzle ability varies widely and does not map neatly to age. The labels are only a convenient way to communicate increasing complexity. They should not be used as an assessment or judgment of a player's ability.

Does the game require an account or collect a player profile?

No account is required to play. Local audio and puzzle progress can remain in the browser. If you voluntarily create a competitive account, Block Jigsaw stores a public display name and eligible leaderboard/achievement data through Supabase. See the Privacy Policy for details.

Why do some pieces become very irregular?

The harder modes increase the amount of irregular region growth used by the generator. This can create longer arms, deeper notches and more asymmetric pieces, which increases the number of spatial relationships the player must consider.

Is Block Jigsaw an educational or intelligence test?

No. It is a puzzle game. It can involve spatial reasoning, mental rotation and planning, but performance is not a standardized measure of intelligence, development or school readiness.

Daily Challenge

Is the Daily Challenge really the same for everyone?

Yes. The current UTC date is turned into a deterministic seed before the puzzle is generated. As long as the game version is unchanged, visitors playing the same UTC date receive the same daily layout and starting orientations.

Why did my daily streak disappear?

The personal on-device streak is stored in browser local storage, so clearing site data, using private browsing, changing browser profiles or moving to another device can remove or separate that local history. Competitive streaks submitted while signed in are stored with the player account.

Does replaying the Daily Challenge count as another streak day?

No. A calendar date contributes at most one day to the streak. Replays can still improve the saved best time for that date.
